Introduction to Music Ministries PDF Print E-mail

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises. (Psalm 98:4)

Music is a vital part of life and worship at St. Timothy’s, as we express our faith through melody and song. The primary function of the Music Ministry is to support the Clergy in presenting a meaningful and cohesive worship experience at each liturgy. The secondary function of the Music Ministry is to provide a space for personal growth and fellowship through the preparation and performance of sacred music, whether vocal or instrumental.

We have opportunities for people of any age to become involved in the music programs at St. Timothy’s and we encourage parishioners to join any of the groups which appeal to their particular interest. There is no audition or pre-requisite for being a trained musician. Actually, you don’t even need to me a musician to help out with the Music Ministry – several people contribute time and talent helping the Concert Series with ushering, setting up receptions and selling tickets. Likewise, many parents help the Emmaus choir with weekly rehearsals, organizing and handing out robes, providing snacks and organizing activities. All of these people are as much a part of the music Ministry as a person who plays the organ or sings a solo on Sunday Morning.

There are three choirs at St. Timothy’s in which to participate. All of them rehearse weekly and sing at services from Welcome Home Sunday through Trinity Sunday.

Choirs

Jubilate
Jubilate is the traditional “red robe” choir which sings at the 11 a.m. service. In addition to helping lead Sunday worship services, Jubilate provides music at services on Christmas Eve, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil, memorial services and Diablo Lodge. Jubilate is also the core group of choristers which performs in the Concert Series once a year. Anyone high school age or older is welcome – music reading experience is helpful but not necessary. Jubilate is conducted by Pat Parr and rehearses every Tuesday from 7 – 9 p.m., with occasional extra rehearsals around major festivals and concerts.

9 AM Musicians
The 9 AM Musicians has grown tremendously over the past year to about 18 – 24 singers and instruments on any given Sunday. They perform a variety of musical styles from “rock/pop” to gospel and jazz, sometimes with instruments and sometimes a cappella. This group is truly inter-generational with singers as young as 10 to over 60! Although there is a rehearsal every Thursday from 7 – 8:30 p.m., it’s not unusual for people to join in on Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. to rehearse for that morning’s service.

Emmaus
The Emmaus Choir is a combined choir and teaching program for children grades Kindergarten through 5. The Emmaus Choir sings about every six weeks, alternating between the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. services. Additionally, Emmaus helps lead the children’s liturgy on Christmas Eve and joins the other music groups at the joint services on Welcome Home and Pentecost Sundays. Emmaus is lead by both Pat Parr and Carolyn Hunt. Emmaus meets on Monday afternoons during the school year in the June Chang Music Room in Grace House from 4:15 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Meetings include choir rehearsal (4:30 to 5:00), fellowship (5:00 to 5:30) and chapel (5:30 to 6:00). Chapel is led by St. Timothy’s clergy or the Youth and Family Minister. Children are also encouraged to take leadership roles by reading, leading prayers, serving as acolytes, ushering and singing.
